Drugs in the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) category are widely discussed and debated for their therapeutic action vis- -vis side-effects in the treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorders. Lexapro is the newest member of this class of drugs; so a comparison with Zoloft, another SSRI drug used widely in the United States, would be interesting.

Lexapro and Zoloft have more similarities than differences in action and side-effects. Both exert similar action on the brain: they help maintain the level of serotonin at a normal level, so the patient with depression or anxiety disorders feels better.

Differences between Lexapro and Zoloft are in their respective side-effects as listed below:

Lexapro: Lexapro has a lower incidence of side-effects, most

of which decrease or subside altogether in the course of treatment. Usual side-effects include: nausea, insomnia, excessive sweating, ejaculation problems, loss of libido, somnolence and anorgasmia (inability to achieve orgasm). There have also been instances of other side effects such as sinusitis, respiratory tract infections, flu-like symptoms and fatigue.

Zoloft: Side-effects of Zoloft are similar to those of Lexapro. They include: headaches, insomnia, nausea, anxiety, nervousness, tremors, diarrhea, changing appetite, weight changes, fatigue, dry mouth and sexual dysfunctions. Occasional side-effects include: high or low blood pressure, fever, chill, allergies, irregular heartbeat/pulse rate and gastrointestinal problems. Despite the similarities in effects and side-effects of Lexapro and Zoloft, it should be noted that gastro-intestinal problems occur more often with Zoloft, while withdrawal

symptoms are usually more severe with Lexapro if treatment is discontinued abruptly.
